Nestled in the heart of downtown Portland at 319 SW Broadway, El Gaucho Portland stands as a premier destination for steakhouse aficionados and lovers of fine dining. This distinguished restaurant effortlessly blends classic steakhouse tradition with a refined ambiance, offering an unforgettable culinary journey centered around expertly prepared, flavorful cuts of meat and a thoughtfully curated menu that entices at every turn.
El Gaucho’s cuisine firmly anchors itself in the steakhouse category, featuring a magnificent lineup of hearty, mouthwatering dishes like the signature Filet Mignon, perfectly seasoned and cooked to your exact preference, and the robust New York Peppercorn. Each steak is a celebration of quality and technique, capturing that rich, smoky essence only an open coal pit can impart—truly an homage to the legendary Argentinian Gauchos. Complementing these standout entrees is the iconic Tableside Baked Potato, a show-stopping accompaniment that elevates the experience with its interactive, personalized touch.
Beyond steaks, the menu dazzles with a diverse array of starters and sides. Imagine savoring the delicate, briny freshness of Northwest Oysters or tucking into the indulgent Escargot bathed in garlic-herb butter. The El Gaucho Caesar Salad and the deeply comforting French Onion Soup showcase that the kitchen also excels in crafting classic flavors with a refined twist. For those desiring a culinary adventure, the Wicked Shrimp Tenderloin Diablo delivers a spicy kick, perfectly balanced by the creamy delight of the Gaucho Mac & Cheddar Cheese. The sweet finish is equally impressive—creamy, luscious Crème Brûlée or the delightfully tangy Old Fashioned Cheesecake with Strawberry-Rhubarb Basil Compote linger on the palate, a sublime conclusion to an exceptional meal.
The drink menu is thoughtfully designed to complement the flavors on the plate, featuring sophisticated cocktails like the alluring Maple-Smoked Negroni and classic martinis that elevate the dining experience and add an extra layer of indulgence.
Stepping inside El Gaucho Portland, guests are enveloped in a warm, inviting atmosphere that exudes an "old school" fine dining charm, brought to life by muted lighting and elegant dark-wood interiors. It’s a space where intimacy meets sophistication—perfect for special occasions or an unforgettable night out. Multiple reviews reflect how the ambiance enriches the experience; words like “attentive, but not overbearing” service and “top notch” hospitality speak volumes about the dedication to guest satisfaction. The tableside service, particularly, is a delightful interactive element that adds a theatrical flair to your evening, heightening the sense of occasion.
Frequent patrons rave about the impeccable timing and perfection of each dish, while the staff’s genuine warmth turns anniversaries and birthdays into cherished memories. Whether it’s a tender chicken entrée executed flawlessly or the explosive flavor of the ruby-red cocktails, El Gaucho Portland consistently delivers moments of culinary bliss.
For the at-home chef or the devoted fan, El Gaucho also offers their exclusive Spice Trio Set, capturing the essence of their signature seasoning blends. These spices, inspired by the primal, open-coal pit cooking of Argentinian cowboys, allow you to bring that smoky, zesty character into your own kitchen, continuing the El Gaucho experience beyond the restaurant’s doorstep.
In essence, El Gaucho Portland is not just a steakhouse—it’s a sanctuary for those who truly appreciate craftsmanship in cooking, ambiance, and service. Whether you’re celebrating a milestone or simply craving an exceptional steak with all the perfect fixings, this iconic Portland institution stands ready to imprint a lasting impression on your palate and your heart.
Wonderful experience for our 30th anniversary dinner. Ambiance was great, if a bit crowded. Definitely had an old school restaurant feel to it. Attractive muted lighting and darker interior, but bright enough to see the food and read the menu. Service was attentive but not overbearing. Tabkeside service was fun. Food was fantastic. Steak was properly prepared and seasoned. The bill was a bit eyewatering, but it was a great place to go. We'll be back, but only for a special occasion.
This is my favorite restaurant to go for our anniversary. The best steaks and the best Cesar salad highly recommended 10000000% percent. The staff are really nice.
First time here. Really enjoyed the atmosphere, food and service. My steak was cooked perfectly and the chicken meal was super tender. Drinks and dessert was delicious. I will definitely be coming back to try more items on the menu.
This place is amazing!! We had a great table near the kitchen. The food, WOW!!! We enjoyed the ribeye with lobster potatoes, mushrooms, and garlic cornbeard.... Oh and for drinks... The Ruby!! It's so delicious, but be careful you might want a few!! I had to take a picture of the lobster!! I'm definitely going back to order that beauty!!! Service was top notch!! This place is a gem!!!
Had a wonderful experience celebrating a friend’s birthday here. We arrived at a lovely table adorned with yellow petals, with a signed birthday card waiting for us. The staff not only acknowledged my friend’s birthday but also made sure she felt special, from asking for her order first to placing a birthday candle on her dessert. It made for a memorable evening for the birthday girl. We started with roasted pork belly sitting on a butternut squash puree, which was incredibly soft and flavorful. The grilled apples complemented the dish perfectly. For the entrée, I had the ribeye, a 28-day dry-aged prime grade Angus beef, served with bordelaise sauce and accompanied by roasted sweet corn, crab mac and cheese, and lobster mashed potatoes. The highlight of the evening for me was the bananas foster. Prepared tableside, a drizzle of rum was then ignited in the pan, causing a flame to swirl above it, resplendent in its glow. The taste of the caramelized bananas with the rum infused sauce was so delicious that I wished I had gotten seconds. The service was phenomenal. Our waitstaff was attentive and checked on us multiple times, ensuring our needs were satisfied and making l sure our drinks were never empty. The ambiance was lovely with live music, though the lighting was quite dark. Though we didn’t request it, I saw a staff member walk a woman to the bathroom, his arm bent at the elbow while she held onto it, and his other hand holding a small blue flashlight to illuminate their path. It’s the little attention to detail that made this dining experience exceptional.
We LOVE dining at El Gaucho! It’s our go-to spot for every birthday and now anniversary we enjoyed our crab cakes (as usual), oysters, ribeye steaks, crab bisque, with Pinot Noir for me and an Old Fashion for my husband we ended our evening with at the cigar lounge where Brandon ensured our glasses were full, cigars lit, and having a great time! It was a beautiful evening of celebrating our anniversary and meeting great people!
The atmosphere was incredible, the service amazing, excellent food quality the reason why I don't gave 5 stars is because I had the peppercorn steak and the peppercorn was burnt. Beside that little detail everything was excellent
Absolutely fantastic dinner at El Gaucho on Saturday. The food was phenomenal and our waiter was an absolute pleasure! The crab mac and cheese is out of this world. I would 100% recommend this place for a special occasion. We had the best possible seat for two foodies. It was so close to the kitchen!
